With six decades of experience in the manufacturing of process equipment SUSS MicroTec has set the standards for precision and quality throughout the semiconductor industry. Continuous innovation and the ability to find new solutions for an ever-changing market have made SUSS MicroTec a technology leader.
SUSS MicroTec was founded by Karl Süss in 1949 as a distributor of optical equipment from Leitz in Munich in Southern Germany. Soon the company becomes famous for their customized adaptions of the products offered. In 1963, the company develops together with Siemens, a simple photolithography machine for the production of transistors. This triggers the development of the first mask aligner, the now legendary MJB3. It also marks a turning point – from simple re-seller to a manufacturer of manual lithography devices - and is seen as the first step into the upcoming semiconductor industry.
With the company expanding and working on related solutions for wafer processing new business segments like wafer bonding and test systems open. In the eighties the company expands onto the world market with a bonder production site in the US and sales offices in the important growth markets Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, China and Korea.
In May 1999, the company Karl Suss goes public as SÜSS MicroTec AG and is listed in the Prime Standard segment of the German Stock Exchange. In 2001 the whole group is renamed into SUSS MicroTec. The portfolio now encompasses a full range of process and test solutions for microstructuring applications in the semiconductor and related industries.
