2020s

As digitalization increased demand for microstructuring, SÜSS MicroTec added a new production facility to its existing sales and service branch in Taiwan in 2020. That same year, the acquisition of PiXDRO strengthened the company’s portfolio with inkjet printing technology. After the emergence of generative AI in 2023, SÜSS MicroTec’s temporary bonding solutions saw a sudden rise in demand. In 2024, SUSS MicroOptics was sold to sharpen the focus on semiconductor equipment. A few months later, the company renamed to SUSS MicroTec SE and established its short, catchy, and internationally recognizable brand SUSS.

2010s

The 2010s were marked by SÜSS MicroTec focusing on its core competencies. In 2010, it acquired Hamatech APE in Sternenfels, Germany, for photomask processing and moved substrate bonder production from Waterbury, USA, to this new site. With coaters, bonders, and photomask processing equipment Sternenfels became a competence center for wet processing technology. The 2012 acquisition of Tamarack Scientific further strengthened SÜSS MicroTec's lithography portfolio with advanced laser processing for microstructuring.

2000s

In 2000, SÜSS MicroTec acquired Fairchild Technologies, gaining access to high-end markets with production coaters. A year later, the newly founded subsidiary SUSS MicroOptics expanded its lithography portfolio. The company sold its device bonder line in 2007 and its prober line in 2009, while new offices in Singapore and Korea bolstered its presence in Asia. 

1990s

To meet rising demand in microsystem technology, SÜSS released its first substrate bonder in 1989 and added device bonders in 1993. After the passing of founder Karl Süss and his son Ekkehard in 1994, the company reorganized and went public in 1999 as SÜSS MicroTec AG. The second son Dr. Winfried Süss remained on the advisory board.

1980s

In the 1980s, SÜSS expanded globally, opening its first overseas site in Waterbury, Vermont, followed by a subsidiary in Thailand in 1983 as well as sales offices in Japan, China, and Taiwan. The company also prepared for bonder production, explored X-ray stepper lithography, and opened a prober manufacturing site in Dresden, Germany.

1970s

As the semiconductor industry grew, SÜSS explored new opportunities, producing test systems and diamond scribers. After the development of the first mask aligner enabling micrometer-precise double-sided exposure in 1974, SÜSS started to tackle not only research and development, but also manufacturing customers. Just one year later, in 1975, the company launched the MJB55, the first mask aligner for volume production.

1960s

In 1962, Siemens asked SÜSS to build a thermo-compression bonding machine for transistors – a turning point that shifted the company from sales and maintenance to contract manufacturing. Just a year later, SÜSS developed the prototype of the world’s first mask aligner, the MJB3. Under founder Karl Süss and his sons Ekkehard and Winfried, the business grew rapidly and relocated to Garching, where the headquarters remain today.

1940s and 50s

In 1949 Karl Süss founded a sales representation for microscopes, cameras, and laboratory equipment of Ernst Leitz Wetzlar in Munich. A garage is the first headquarters for the new business in post-war Germany. Soon, Karl Süss GmbH also provided service and maintenance for optical devices, thus quickly gaining a reputation within the research community.
